Istanbul Urban Identity in the Context of Culture and Urban Culture

Abstract

Culture encompasses the values, norms, beliefs and behaviors shared by a society or a group of people. This is a framework that allows people to live together. Urban culture refers to the lifestyle, habits and values of a city. Cities are generally fast, dynamic and multicultural, which shapes urban culture. In this respect, urban identity is closely related to urban culture as a phenomenon formed in the unique historical, political, social and economic development process of a city. Local governments have a great impact on revitalizing and preserving urban culture and identity. In studies where the impact of urban culture on the creation of urban identity will be discussed, the historical texture and natural beauties of the city are discussed. Istanbul has a unique urban identity with its historical, cultural and social structure. Istanbul is a cultural center known worldwide for its historical texture, architecture, art, music, food, traditions and lifestyle. In this context, in this study, Istanbul city identity and the characteristics of Istanbul city identity are examined in the context of culture and urban culture in terms of the material/structural elements that make up the city identity and the spiritual/secondary elements that make up the city identity.
